Preparation for sticking whitewash wallpapers

Whitewashed walls often had to be updated due to the poor resistance of the material (chalk) to humidity and temperature changes. Therefore, as a rule, under its upper layer is a multilayer finish structure with low adhesion to the surface.

By sticking wallpaper on such walls, you risk getting a sad result. The lime coating under the influence of moisture and glue will swell and begin to peel off, and with it under its own weight the wallpaper will start to fall off. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to carefully prepare the work surface for gluing.

What do you need?

First of all, the room in which the work will take place, it is necessary to measure and prepare the necessary tools. So, to paste the wallpaper on whitewash, you will need:

  • Wallpaper. Choose any type based on your desires and finances - paper, vinyl, non-woven, liquid and others.
  • Wallpaper glue. The type of material must match the chosen finish.
  • Putty and primer. The choice depends on the base of the surface, that is, the chalk, interacting with them, should not lose strength.
  • Brush and roller. Needed for applying adhesive solution and primer.
  • Sandpaper, rag, gauze bandage, stationery glue PVA.

Important! The quantity and volume of necessary materials depends on the area of the room. Be careful when measuring it.

Preparatory stage

To protect the new repair from possible negative consequences, the whitewashed walls must be well primed before gluing. Then the strengthening composition will go through the whitewash and add strength to it, improving adhesion to the surface. For this:

  1. Apply the first coat of primer with a brush or roller.
  2. Wait for it to dry completely.
  3. Apply a second coat of primer.
  4. Let the surface dry.

Walls can be leveled with putty, but it should be applied in a thin layer. Another option is to use a thick wallpaper glue that is applied to the primed surface. Due to its density, it will close all defects. After this, it is necessary to wait until the walls completely dry.

Important! Before glue wallpaper on whitewashing, experts recommend checking the strength of the surface in a small area. This can be done by applying one canvas in the far corner. After drying, try to pull the wallpaper and make sure that they are firmly fixed, and do not fall off with whitewashing. If the wallpaper firmly adhered to the surface, then you can paste over the entire room.

Adhesive recommendations

An important factor for a successful repair is the choice of a suitable adhesive. You should not save on the purchase of glue, since a positive outcome depends more on this material.

There are several types of adhesive solutions, the choice of which depends on the type of wallpaper:

  • One of the simplest types of glue is suitable for a paper web, since such coatings are lightweight and hold firmly to the surface.
  • For vinyl, non-woven or fabric paintings, you should choose an adhesive designed specifically for these types. Heavy wallpaper should be glued with a high-quality compound, most often based on PVA or methyl cellulose.

Important! For reliable fastening of the canvas on the wall, the wallpaper adhesive must be kneaded strictly according to the instructions indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer, in compliance with all proportions and sequence.

The selected type of canvas also affects the method of applying glue - only on the wall or wallpaper, or on the wall and on the wallpaper.

Technology for gluing whitewashed walls

In principle, the technology for gluing whitewashed walls after their preparation is no different from gluing another surface. Here is a sample action algorithm:

  • Using a plumb line, vertically mark the wall for the first strip of wallpaper.
  • Roll the roll and cut strips equal to the height of the wall plus an allowance of about 5 cm.

Important! If there is a picture on the wallpaper, you should focus on their correspondence from two sides.

  • According to the instructions, prepare the glue and apply to the surface or finishing material, depending on the type of the latter.
  • Put the first strip on the marking. It is necessary to level the wallpaper from the center to the edges with the help of a roller, and excess glue is removed with a clean cloth.
  • Next, the next sheet is applied according to the same principle. Most often, the wallpaper glues the joint in the joint and very rarely overlap, as it does not look very aesthetically pleasing.

Important! The remaining pieces of fabric from each roll should not be immediately thrown out. They can glue small areas under the windows or above the doorway.

Some tips from professionals

Masters with many years of experience in finishing work of any complexity know about the intricacies of work in old houses or apartments. And here is what they advise:

  • In old houses, whitewash must be washed off to the very bottom of the surface. The fact is that for the decoration of clay walls, a highly concentrated lime composition was previously used, which can literally corrode wallpaper of absolutely any type.
  • For finishing the whitewashed ceiling, it is not recommended to choose gluing. The likelihood that they will fall off with whitewash over time is very high. You can sew up the surface with drywall, install stretch ceilings or choose a different finishing method.
  • But whitewashing applied in a thin layer on a brick base is best left. The calcareous material is able to neutralize the unpleasant odors of paint or building mixtures.
