Do-it-yourself replacing the bathroom drain

Without plumbing in the house, we would not have that comfortable life that we are so used to. But during operation, various problems stably arise. For example, many people have had the problem of installing or replacing a drain-overflow device for a bathtub. The purpose of the drain is to regulate the water level in the bath and prevent its transfusion as the structure is filled. The topic of today's article is: replacing the drain in the bathroom with your own hands.

Drain system

The drainage system in the bathroom (it is also called the piping) is a collection of pipes that are necessary to drain water from the bathtub and prevent its transfusion. The fluid drains through a tube located at the bottom of the bath. Sometimes the tube is a continuation of the siphon. Another overflow protection tube is located at the top of the bath. There are many varieties of these systems on the market that vary in design and material. Consider how to make a drain in the bathroom yourself.

Installation of a simple drain

To get started, install the bath and secure it so that it does not move.

Important! If the bath is installed on the factory legs, then the drain can be installed without any difficulties. If it is installed on bricks, then for successful installation of the drainage system, its distance from the floor should be from 15 cm.

After installing the bath, you can begin to install the drain. Drain can be rotary or monolithic. The procedure is as follows:

  1. At the bottom of the bath is a hole to which the drain is connected. The drain neck has 2 parts. At the bottom is an internal thread, and at the top is an external thread. Inside there is a grate that prevents large objects from entering the siphon.
  2. Installation of the drain to the bath starts from the bottom of the siphon. The kit includes 2 gaskets made of rubber (they can be coated with silicone for sealing). One of them is laid at the top and is led to the drain hole at the bottom of the bath.
  3. Screw the top of the siphon into the bottom and tighten using pliers.
  4. The overflow socket is fixed in the same way as the discharge socket. Put the gasket on the overflow neck, insert it into the top hole from the outside of the bath. After that, put on the second gasket, tighten the structure with the cover-nut.
  5. Now - connecting the bath to the sewer with your own hands. Connect the drain pipe to the sewer system. The connection technology may be different, depending on which pipes are installed: plastic or cast iron.
  6. Regardless of the type of overflow hose, rubber pads in the shape of cones are installed on it. It is important to check not only the presence of gaskets, but also their position (a thin part should be located from the edge).
  7. When connecting the siphon parts with an overflow hose, make sure that the gaskets are not skewed.
  8. Close the drain hole with a stopper. After collecting some water in the bath, check for leaks. If everything is normal, then fill the bath until water begins to pour out through the overflow hole. Now pull out the cork and again make sure that everything is dry.
  9. If leaks are found, tighten the connection. If it continues to leak, then disassemble the connection and check how correctly the gaskets are placed. After removing the siphon from the bath, coat the gaskets with synthetic sealant and reconnect.

Important! When choosing a drain for the bath, pay attention to the volume of the water shutter. If the volume is small, this threatens to disrupt the water seal, and sewer air with an unpleasant odor enters the room. It is necessary to choose a siphon containing not less than 0.3-0.4 liters of water.

Features of semi-automatic overflow overflow

The main feature of such a system is not only the presence of controls and manufacturing materials, but also the variety of designs. Plastic, copper, chrome-plated steel or brass can be used to make the drain. The most durable plums are brass. Italian products are especially appreciated. Such products are expensive, but they last a long time.

Distinguish between automatic and semi-automatic systems. It is impractical to give preference completely unambiguously to an “automaton”, since:

  • The semi-automatic system can be controlled from the outside, and automatic - by pressing the drain button, regardless of whether the water in the bathroom is cold or hot.
  • The automatic system is more moody and less maintainable.

Important! When choosing a semi-automatic system, you need to pay attention to where the cable connecting the overflow and drain mechanisms is located: inside or outside the overflow hose. In the latter case, the model looks more aesthetically pleasing, but if the cable breaks, then the entire system must be replaced.

You should not buy silumin structures: they are too fragile and can break even during installation.
